What Are We?

We are an Isle of Man registered charity (no.928) with the purpose of :-

  1. Providing a means of public liaison with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry (DAFF) over the use & care of the Manx National Glens.
  2. Encouraging the public use of the Glens through the promotion of inclusive activities.
  3. Collaborating with and assisting DAFF and other parties in the maintenance of & access to the Glens.

What Do We Do?

We have been in existence for a couple of years as an informal group of volunteers sharing a love of our National Glens. Originally envisaged as a "Glens Watch" the Friends rapidly developed into a social group. Regular evening social walks through the summer months and evening illustrated talks in the winter, have all been well attended. The Friends plan to carry out minor maintenance and improvement projects under the guidance of the Forestry Division, with the aim of developing a core team of volunteers with appropriate skills.

Strong links have been formed with the Manx Wildlife Trust, Manx Rivers Improvement Association and other organisations to help raise awareness of countryside issues. Particularly in relation to the National Glens.

The group has increasing aspirations, in particular a proposed joint project with DAFF to improve access for the disabled in Glen Helen. Consequently, it has become necessary to establish the Friends more formally and in October 2004 a committee was formed and a constitution approved. Eventually the Friends achieved charity status in December 2004.
