The recent Quiz Night held at the Glen Helen Inn was a great success. Nine teams took part in the light hearted contest, with the winners, "The Muppets"  receiving bottles of spirits for their efforts. Runners up "Nobby's Nuts" earned bottles of wine. And third place "Beauty and the Beasts" went home with boxes of chocolates. Bringing up the rear were the "Half Wits" who were consoled with sausage rolls.

Joey's Picture Brings in the Money

The Mad Sunday Raffle held at Glen Helen on 4th June was an outstanding success. The raffle itself raised £224.00. The lucky winner of the signed photograph of Joey Dunlop in action (kindly donated by Scott and Adele of the Glen Helen Inn), offered to auction it off. The assembled crowd bid furiously for it and bidding eventually reached £200. The successful bidder lives in Northern Ireland not ten miles from Joey's home town! Sincere thanks to you all for your generosity.

Rain Doesn't Deter Dhoon Walkers

Despite heavy rain, members had an enjoyable walk through Dhoon Glen on Sunday 21st. Forestry Warden, Peter Knowles, led an enthusiastic group through the glen to view the waterfall and see how the repaired path has fared

Immediately after the repair work, the glen looked bare. Two years later, nature has taken control and is re-colonising the bare earth.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a warm cuppa at the cafe. (Peter recommends the pineapple cake!)

Launch Success - Glen Helen Access for All

The appeal for funding of the project was launched on Wednesday 26th April at the Glen Helen Inn. Invited guests and members of the public were shown details of the project plans, now available for viewing here. A splendid buffet was laid on for all to enjoy.

£199.91 was raised on the day from donations and sales of our fridge magnets, key-rings and prints of Karen Ennett's painting.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of a cheque for £1,000 to the appeal by Ann Barron on behalf of the staff charity fund of Zurich International Life Ltd.

Great Turn Out for Annual Bunny Hunt

About 120 children, along with their families, attended the Annual Easter Bunny Hunt at Glen Wyllin on Easter Saturday. This popular event is organised by the Friends of the Glens as part of their aim to promote the Manx National Glens. Under glorious spring sunshine, participants had to search part of the glen to find clues hidden with Easter bunnies. All those taking part were rewarded with a chocolate treat. A spokesman for the Friends says "So many people turned up that we were forced to send out for further supplies of Easter eggs, but no one went away empty handed. Glen Wyllin is the ideal location for this event."

Ballaglass Maintenance

The Forestry Division's workforce have been busy in Ballaglass Glen (considered by many to be the finest of them all!). The bridge at the top end has been replaced.

In addition the old building has had it's shroud of scrub and saplings removed, to reveal it in all it's glory. It is good to see this relic from the glen's industrial past is still with us.

All Glens Now Reopened

Glen Helen and Glen Maye are now open to the public again after an extensive clearing up operation by the Forestry Division, due to the January storm. Both of these glens had suffered badly with many mature trees blown over. The difficulty of access meant that these glens had to be left to last.

Although many trees were lost, most were undamaged and so the essential character of the glens remains. Please take care when walking through as much of the timber will have been left on the ground to decay naturally benefiting the wildlife.

Tholt y Will

A few of the Friends enjoyed an evening walk through Tholt y Will Glen recently. The Forestry Division has been busy here installing a new boardwalk over a length of slippery, rocky path above the waterfall. All agreed that this is a great improvement and will benefit all users of this spectacular National Glen.
